How to Observe Tower Site Construction After Hours

Well in the planning stages before I came around, the town is building a water tower..

I'm trying to get some progress photos..

in this case.. newest photos appear at the bottom..

IMG_4407.JPG (1429450 bytes)

the first pour of foundation under the pump house..

Now that the leaves have come in.. all I can see from the house is that charming fence...

This looks like an inlet pipe in the center and an outlet gateway at near left

IMG_4793.JPG (1564745 bytes)

Trucks this size always seem to have to back out the way they came in..

IMG_4794.JPG (1505255 bytes)

Knowing what I know now, that one truck may very well contain the entire material list for the tank

If you just walked in from nowhere, you might think they were disassembling some sort of ship...

And the winning color is...   Dark Green..

I'm certain now, this is the top section being built first...

IMG_4865.JPG (852871 bytes)

All these vertical jacks are interconnected with a series of driveshafts...

IMG_4866.JPG (1437650 bytes)

That inlet at near left is now up to top grade in cement..

That's the beginning of roof sections going on the tower...

As the shafts turn, up goes the giant reclining comstock..

IMG_4867.JPG (1268431 bytes)

I may be not be an engineer.. but those two roof sections seem to be putting some kind of torque on that cap connector..

IMG_4879.JPG (1500556 bytes)

Torque or not.. that top is finished..  let the jacking begin?

Above: taken on Wednesday afternoon..

Above: Taken 24 hours later.  That looks like 15 feet gained...

IMG_4887.JPG (1346903 bytes)

All that can be seen from the house...

IMG_4893.JPG (1324935 bytes)

And again, it's grown by another 10 feet in 24 hours...

IMG_4917.JPG (897874 bytes)

EXCLUSIVE!! From the platform at the top.. before the last ten feet of sections are jacked in..

Oh, you bet your behind I'll be trying to get you photos from the top once the final height has been achieved..

I'm projecting 45 feet when finished...

IMG_4918.JPG (640793 bytes)

..also from the top of the ladder at the side.. this hatch looks directly down inside..

bummer, I'll have to make sure to get a pic of the vent cap at the very peak..

IMG_4920.JPG (386433 bytes)

We're looking at the center of the jack system from above through the hatch on the roof of the tank.

Those are 3, 6-8 foot step ladders just above center.

The radiating arms support the tops of the jacks by angling down to a support in the center.

At the outside edges, the jack's drive shafts interconnect all the lifting units..

The jack motor is at lower left and drive shafts extend both directions around to all nine jacks.

IMG_4942.JPG (1337095 bytes)

Ayuh, that'd be the final height..

IMG_4951.JPG (956483 bytes)

Going up?

IMG_4947.JPG (1167097 bytes)

Looking down...

IMG_4948.JPG (750952 bytes)

All of this says just one thing: DO NOT ENTER

IMG_4949.JPG (638533 bytes)

Oops..  I see a typo...
