Foxwold's Hummingbird Project Okay, so there may not really be a project here.. but I have had up to four feeders out, one on each side of the house. Pictures of birds feeding from any of the ones not adjacent to my desk will be rare, but we'll see.. To feed your hummingbirds, don't bother with store bought nectar. It's expensive AND virtually poisonous to hummingbirds. Avoid the food coloring and just completely mix together 1 part sugar for four parts water. Boil the water first, stir in the sugar and let cool before filling the feeders. Leftover nectar can be kept in the refrigerator, but nectar in the feeders should be changed every few days if not daily. Feeder-Cleaning is essential! Green and black mold can be found growing around the feed holes after just a few days. This is definitely poisonous to the birds. Scrub this away with hot water and a discarded toothbrush before refilling your feeder. Feeders that get hit with sunlight will see their nectar turn milky. This should be changed out as soon as it's noticeable. A thorough, hot scrub, rinse and fresh refill is the best procedure to keep your birds coming back for more.Don't worry about when to stop putting nectar out. You won't interrupt migration. Birds coming to your feeder during migration are likely hitting your feeders on their way south. They just happen to look just like the birds that have been there all year. As hummingbirds.net advises, you can put your feeders out until freezing becomes an issue. See hummingbirds.net for more excellent information. 2006 Hummingbirds
2005 Hummingbirds are pictured below Much better.. taken from outside.. in flight Unfortunately, she sat at the wrong perch for any other good shots... So, removing the screen is not the only roadblock to clear hummingbird pictures... Either the camera focuses on the wrong subject... Or the subject turns her head at 70 miles per hour.. This one was all puffed up.. it looked like it was fending off a chill...
These were before the screen came out of the window.. I still think four hummingbirds at one feeder is an amazing photo..
